Jiwoo Shin is a multi-disciplinary visual artist, filmmaker, writer, and actor based primarily in Seoul, Korea and Los Angeles. Her childhood was spent in Tokyo, Japan; Islamabad, Pakistan; and Monterey, California.
Despite initially emerging into the art world as a Painter, she found sanctuary in Cinema proclaiming herself as a 'film slut' or 'cinema whore' depending on her mood.
Her work lies between dream and reality, fantasies and delusions, exploring topics such as the inevitable cycle of birth and death, loss of humanity followed by restoration, pleasure and pain, fetishes and obsession, psychotic women, freedom, ugliness vs. beauty, and the role of art in today's chaotic world. Discussing her battles with despair, hope, and the search for meaning, she uses her mediums to discuss broader societal themes such as the illusion of the American Dream, mental nausea, and Love.
Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's letters to his brother, she believes that artists shouldn't let illness deter them from following their passion.
Her source of inspiration delves from somewhere primal —desire & obsession, which can lead to anything, really.
She really likes what Oscar Wilde said about 'Life imitating Art'.
Becoming a phony would be her worst nightmare, however she often wonders.
As of late she often ponders on God and what it truly means to be human.
She takes herself quite too seriously and finds it kind of funny, finds it kind of sad.
(Because) when people run in circles, it's a very very....
Her undergraduate journey began in San Francisco Art Institute and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from California Institute of the Arts in 2023.
